Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel.
Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel.
I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer.
On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run
about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.

It seems to me I am trying to tell you a dream — making a vain attempt,
because no relation of a dream can convey the dream-sensation,
that commingling of absurdity,
surprise, and bewilderment in a tremor of struggling revolt,
that notion of being captured by the incredible which is of the very essence of dreams.

Live each day as if it’s your last’, that was the conventional advice,
but really, who had the energy for that?
What if it rained or you felt a bit glandy?
It just wasn’t practical.
Better by far to be good and courageous and bold and to make difference.
Not change the world exactly, but the bit around you.
Cherish your friends, stay true to your principles, live passionately and fully and well. Experience new things.
Love and be loved, if you ever get the chance.

I flew the Atlantic because I wanted to. If that be what they call ‘a woman’s reason,’ make the most of it. It isn’t, I think, a reason to be apologized for by man or woman… .
Whether you are flying the Atlantic or selling sausages or building a skyscraper
or driving a truck, your greatest power comes from the fact that
you want tremendously to do that very thing, and do it well.

We are good stories waiting to be written.
In writing and most creative outlets
—and art as work and work as life and life as whole—it gets worse before it gets better.
They say you have to vomit first, vomit your demons and your rage, your mediocre beasts, vomit the sinner and the saint and all duality, vomit your ego and your bruises, ’til the house gets so clean, there’s nothing, no one left—but you.
Just like we detox our body from years of malnourishment, and we agonize
as all the toxins in the underworld say their goodbyes and leave our system,
so it is the case not only with our minds but with the way we face our lives.
Our modus operandi for anything is the same as for everything.

Nobody gets to be you, except you. Nobody has your point of view, except you.
Nobody gets to bring to the worlds the things taht you get to bring to the world –
uniquely get to bring to the world – except you.
So saying there are enough writers out there, enough artists out there, enough people with a point of view – well, yeah, there are – but none of them are you,
none of this them is going to make the art that you’re going to make,
none of them will change people and change the world
in the way that you could change it.
So if you believe somebody who says, ‘No, no, we’ve got enough of those,’
then all it means is you’re giving up your chance to change the world
the way only you can change it.

It’s so easy to fall in love with the big things,
the giant sunset views and the sweeping vistas of far-off mountains.
It’s easy to fall in love with the thunderstorms and the grand lightning flashes.
It’s another thing entirely, more work, more energy, more effort to fall in love
with the individual raindrops,
the miniature insects that fly-around unseen and unappreciated.
Stop, stare, and give them the respect, adoration and awe that they deserve.
Fall in love with the little things, and the big things will seem even bigger.
I promise.
