Someone once told me a story about long term relationships.
To think of them as a continent to explore.
I could spend a lifetime backpacking through Africa,
and I would still never know all there is to know about that continent.
To stay the course, to stay intentional, to stay curious and connected – that’s the heart of it. But it’s so easy to lose track of the trail, to get tired,
to want to give up, or to want a new adventure.
It can be so easy to lose sight of the goodness and mystery within the person
sitting right in front of you.

The point for me is to create relationships based on deeper and more real notions of trust. So that love becomes defined not by sexual exclusivity,
but by actual respect, concern, commitment to act with kind intentions,
accountability for our actions, and a desire for mutual growth.

Well, I must endure the presence of a few caterpillars

if I wish to become acquainted with the butterflies.

If we don’t accept ourselves in our perfectly imperfect form,
we can’t accept others in theirs.
The more we love ourselves,
the more loving our lens on the outside world.

Maybe happiness is this: not feeling like you should be elsewhere,
doing something else, being someone else.

What in your life is calling you,
when all the noise is silenced,
the meetings adjourned,
the lists laid aside,
and the wild iris blooms by itself
in the dark forest,
what still pulls on your soul?

Touch comes before sight, before speech.
It is the first language and the last, and it always tells the truth.

take heart

Let’s not fear who we are. We must keep trusting the changes,
the signals within our cells, the way we contract or expand,
the way clarity sweeps in from seas and skies,
and how we’re comprised of stars, contradictions, layers, and multitudes.
Be easy on yourself. Have courage.
Take heart.

Like most sensitive souls, you already know you’re sensitive.
You soak up others’ moods and desires like a sponge.
You absorb sensation the way a paintbrush grasps each color it touches on a palette.
The ethereal beauty of a dandelion, the shift of a season, the climax of a song,
or a certain stirring scent can evoke such wonder
it’ll behave as your very breath itself-
moving through cells as fuel does to fire and wind does to waves.

dream on

You can carry a dream

as you’d carry a bouquet
tucked inside your ribcage.
Until eventually the buds
will bend against skin,
struggling to breathe,
choking and desperate
to climb upward,
needing to burst,
from the ache
to break free.
Break.
Don’t be afraid.
Dreams are birthed by wild hearts
and wild hearts are as strong
as branches are determined,
and as roots run still,
and deep.

Drop the idea of becoming someone, because you are already a masterpiece.
You cannot be improved.
You have only to come to it, to know it, to realize it.
